Law enforcement officials make major drug bust
ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Law enforcement officials on Thursday said they have made the largest drug bust in the history of Antigua and Barbuda.
The authorities said that close to 2,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of EC$126.3 million (US$47 million) was seized in the southern part of the mainland.
The drugs were found, on a ship arriving from Venezuela during a joint operation carried out on Wednesday by the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Control Policy (ONDCP), the Defence Force and the Coast Guard.
Three four men – three Venezuelans and a Colombian – are assisting the authorities with investigations. However, no charges have been laid thus far.
On June 10, law enforcement officials intercepted a locally registered boat and seized an estimated US$1.5 million in illegal drugs.
The authorities said that they discovered a bag containing several packages of cocaine with a street value of EC$3.8 million (US$1.45) million.
